How to book accessible accommodation with clear answers

Check routes to the room, bathroom, common areas and booking conditions with measurements and photographs of the space you will actually use.

To book accessible accommodation, confirm the specific room and entire route you will use. A short advertisement does not establish on its own whether that space meets your needs.

This guide turns doubts into verifiable questions before payment. Organize answers by entrance, circulation, room, bathroom and services, separating confirmed arrangements from those still needing evidence.

1. Define what is essential for your stay

List concrete needs without starting from the hotel's advertised category. Separate arrangements essential to your stay from preferences that can be negotiated.

Consider the whole routine: arriving with luggage, entering the room, using the bathroom, resting and going out. If travelling with someone, agree which support they want and can provide.

Use your own references to assess measurements; do not treat a number found online as a guarantee of usability. This itinerary provides no regulatory dimensions or certification of the establishment.

  • Which passages, transfers or circulation spaces must I confirm before booking?
  • Do I need text instructions, visual signs or another communication resource?
  • Which unmet condition would make me seek another place to stay?

2. Check the route from the pavement to the room door

Request a route description covering drop-off, entrance, reception, lift and corridors. Isolated room photographs do not show whether access depends on stairs, a narrow door or unarranged assistance.

Request recent images and clear-width measurements with doors open at the points relevant to you. A short route video can help if staff identify which entrance and room it shows.

  • Are there changes in level or an alternative entrance? Where is it, and will it be open on arrival?
  • If the room requires a lift, what cabin and door information can staff send?
  • Must I go through a service area or ask someone to unlock an access point?
  • What alternative will be offered if the lift or agreed entrance is unavailable?

3. Assess the room that will be reserved

Request the room or configuration the hotel can guarantee. Compare photos with how you use the bed, sockets, wardrobe and circulation space, without assuming every room is identical.

Explain which side of the bed you prefer to approach and ask about furniture that may block the way. If equipment is loaned or rented, confirm the provider and availability separately.

  • Can staff provide bed height and clear space on the sides I will use?
  • Is there usable passage with luggage and furniture in the normal room configuration?
  • Can I reach switches, temperature controls and sockets as needed?
  • Can staff confirm that photos and measurements match the booked configuration?

4. Ask specific bathroom questions

Request photos of the entrance, toilet, basin and shower area, plus measurements you use to decide. An adapted bathroom label does not explain rail positioning, approach space or a shower step.

Describe your use preferences without requesting an abstract safety promise. Do not improvise transfers based on this text; assess the space with support appropriate to your needs.

  • Which way does the door open, and what is its clear opening width?
  • Does the shower have a step, track, fixed screen or another access obstacle?
  • Where are rails, controls and any seat? Can staff send current images?
  • Is the equipment fixed or movable, and will it be reserved for my stay?

5. Confirm services, common areas and exits

Ask about breakfast, restaurants and leisure areas you plan to use. Confirm each relevant route without assuming a usable entrance means access to every service.

If communication, noise or lighting matter, request objective details. Also agree how to receive emergency information and whom to contact if an essential resource fails during your stay.

  • Is message-based assistance available, with instructions in a format I can consult?
  • How does arrival outside normal hours work, and who will be available?
  • Which exit route will I use, and how do staff guide guests in an emergency?
  • Does the advertised transfer accept my equipment, and is it run by the hotel or another company?

6. Complete the booking with arrangements recorded

Send a summary of the agreement and request confirmation before paying. Include dates, room identification, essential features and any additional service, with the cost stated by its provider.

Save the advertisement, replies and commercial conditions. Ask what happens if a confirmed room or resource is unavailable; do not assume an automatic replacement or an unexplained refund policy.

Shortly before travelling, reconfirm essential arrangements. If renovations or a room change occur, assess again: an old confirmation may not describe the space you receive.

  • Avoid accepting photos of a different room without an explanation of differences.
  • Do not confuse a platform-recorded request with a guarantee from the establishment.
  • Resolve essential questions in writing rather than leaving them until arrival.

Checklist before confirming

  • Essential needs distinguished from preferences.
  • Entrance, lift and route to the room documented.
  • Room or configuration identified in the confirmation.
  • Current photos and relevant bed and bathroom measurements received.
  • Services, equipment and any costs clarified.
  • Arrival and unexpected-issue contact saved.
  • Arrangements for unavailable rooms or resources clarified.

Frequently asked questions

Is an accessible label in the advertisement enough?

Use it as a starting point for questions. Request route and specific-room information, compare it with your needs and record what the hotel can confirm.

Which measurements should I request from the hotel?

Ask for measurements that affect your decision: clear passage, approach space, bed height and shower layout, for example. Compare them with your equipment and use; this guide defines no universal dimensions.

What if staff only send generic photographs?

Ask them to identify the room and provide missing details. If an essential condition remains unanswered, keep the booking pending or compare another option before committing.

Can I apply foreign references to a hotel in Brazil?

They can help organize questions but do not establish Brazilian requirements or hotel conditions. Confirm resources directly and ask the responsible authority about standards or rights.
